What is a Natural Mattress?
A natural mattress is one that’s made from natural materials like wool, cotton, and natural latex, with the aim of avoiding the synthetic materials used in conventional mattresses.
At Rested Pillow, our natural mattresses are handcrafted using the finest natural materials available to help you, not only have a restful sleep, but a healthy one, too.
Each of our mattresses are lovingly handcrafted and made to order in Michigan. So, if you’re local to the area, why not pop in to our showroom and give some of the models a try for yourself?
Or, if you’re a bit further away, then our personalized Sleep Match Quiz is the perfect way to find the right natural mattress for you.
What Are The Benefits of a Natural Mattress?
When you consider the fact that one third of your life is spent sleeping, then it makes sense to ensure that the place you’re sleeping is as natural and healthy as possible.
Whether you have health conditions that require you to minimize your exposure to toxins and allergens as much as possible, or you simply prefer to use natural products, there are many benefits to buying a natural mattress over other types.
The materials used
Although natural mattresses look and feel very much like conventional mattresses, a natural mattress is one that avoids chemicals and harmful toxins while prioritizing materials like natural latex, wool, and cotton.
They’re better for the environment
Natural mattresses are generally more sustainable than those made from synthetic materials, resulting in reduced exposure to chemicals and higher levels of breathability and comfort.
Mattresses made with more natural materials are also less likely to exacerbate allergies and health conditions like asthma.
Our Best Selling Natural Mattresses
At Rested Pillow, all of our natural mattresses are handmade with care and attention to detail to ensure that you always have the best night’s sleep possible. However, we do have some mattresses that have proven to be favorites among our customers.

Some of the materials we use in our mattresses at Rested Pillow, include, CertiPUR-US certified foams, New Zealand sourced Joma Wool, GOTS certified organic cotton, 100% natural latex, and USA recycled steel 8” pocket springs.
Natural Mattress Sizes and Choosing The Right One For You
Finding the right natural mattress size for your needs is equally important for your sleep quality as the type of mattress you choose. Here’s an overview of the mattress sizes we have available at Rested Pillow to help you find the right one for your needs.
- Twin Mattress - Twin mattresses are ideal for compact spaces and are typically used for children’s rooms.
- Twin XL Mattress - Slightly larger than a standard twin by a few inches, the twin XL mattress is a good choice for growing children and teens without taking up much extra space.
- Full Mattress - A full mattress offers a bit more space than the smaller twin sizes and is still quite snug in more compact rooms. This is generally popular with single sleepers and teens who need a bit more space.
- Queen Mattress - Generally the go-to mattress size for couples or single sleepers who need more space. Queen size mattresses don’t overcrowd a standard room and are usually comfortable for a couple sharing.
- King Mattress - For those looking for the added luxury of more space and who have a bigger bedroom to fill, a king mattress is usually a popular choice.
- California King Mattress - a specialty mattress size for those who prefer a longer mattress than a standard king size. Many people think that the California king is a bigger mattress overall; however it takes the width of a king mattress and adds this to the length. Because it's considered a specialty size, it's also more challenging to find bedrames and sheets to fit.
When it comes to finding the right mattress size, there’s no set rule and it’s really about finding what works for you as an individual, or you and your partner.
Here are some of the things to consider when deciding on the size of natural mattress you should buy.
How much space you have
Although a bed is the main focal point of your bedroom, you also don’t want it to take over all the space you have so that you’re left with no room for anything else.
When buying a new mattress, you should consider what other furniture you have in your room and how much space you’d like between your bed and furniture to allow you to move around easily.
Your existing bedframe
Unless you plan on changing the complete bedframe when you buy your new mattress, then you’ll need to ensure that your mattress will fit. For example, if you currently have a wooden frame with a queen size mattress that you’d prefer to keep, you will need to buy the same size mattress.
If you’d prefer to get something like a king size mattress, then this will require a new bed frame, so you’ll have to consider how you find the right foundation for your new mattress as well as what you’re going to do with the old one.
Who’s going to be using the mattress
Another thing to consider when choosing the size of your new mattress is who’s going to be using it. If you sleep alone, then you can be a bit more flexible with the size of your mattress and buy anything from a twin mattress through to a King size if you prefer.
If you’re sharing with a partner, then anything smaller than a queen size mattress might not be comfortable enough or offer enough space for both of you. For couples, the most popular sizes are queen and king mattresses.
What Things You Should Consider When Buying a Natural Mattress
Before you buy a natural mattress, there are a few key things you should consider so that you not only get the best in terms of value and quality, but that you find a mattress that will improve the quality of your sleep.
- Your sleeping preference - The position you sleep in and other things like whether you tend to feel warm during the night are things you should consider when looking to buy a natural mattress.
- Any health needs you have - If you have any back problems or other health conditions that affect your sleep, then a natural mattress can be a good choice. However, it’s also important to make sure that you choose one that is best suited to your needs in terms of the materials used and the firmness of the mattress.
- The durability of the mattress - All mattresses, regardless of brand or price will begin to soften over time with regular use, but a good quality mattress should still remain durable and not negatively affect your sleep quality.
- How much space you have - The bedframe you currently have and the space you have available in your room are also important things to consider when buying a new natural mattress.
- The brand reputation - It's important to find a mattress company that you can trust to help you find the right solution for your needs, so take time to research reviews and if possible visit them in person to get a feel for how they approach sales and customer service.
Choosing The Right Firmness for Your Natural Mattress
Everyone has different preferences and needs when it comes to how firm or soft a mattress should be, so it's important to think about your personal preferences, but also any specific support requirements you have.
You might find that although you prefer a mattress with a softer feel, if you're waking up each morning with a stiff neck or sore back then you could probably benefit from a firmer mattress.
Below is an overview of each firmness level to help you decide which one is right for you.
- Plush - Great for those who love a luxurious mattress they can sink into and side sleepers who usually need softer comfort layers in their mattress.
- Medium - Ideal for combination sleepers who need to strike that balance between the right level of comfort and support.
- Firm - For those with extra support needs, as well as back and stomach sleepers, this could be a great choice.
- Extra Firm -Often chosen by those who simply prefer the feeling of a very solid sleeping surface, or back sleepers who need a mattress with very little softness or contouring.
Caring For Your Natural Mattress
Although a good quality natural mattress from a reputable company should provide you with many years of great quality sleep, there are also things you can do to ensure that your mattress stays in good condition and that you can get the most benefit from it.
Here are some of our top tips for looking after your natural mattress.
- Use a waterproof mattress protector - A good quality waterproof mattress protector will protect your mattress, help to keep it clean and free from dust, allergens as well as any spills or accidents.
- Clean regularly - Just like your bedding, your mattress should be kept clean. As well as using a mattress protector, you can also use a mild detergent and warm water for any spot treatment or cleaning anything like a spill or accident.
- Rotate if required - Some mattresses are made to be rotated regularly to help maintain their shape and firmness. If you do have a mattress that needs to be rotated, then it's essential that you rotate your mattress. We recommend that this should be done once per month for the first six months, and then twice per year thereafter.
- Use a proper foundation - All sizes of mattresses need proper support, so choosing the right foundation for your natural mattress is something that’s important to make sure that your mattress stays in the best condition, but also remains comfortable and supportive.
